The present text is an attempt at analysis of the notion of strangeness in translation. The author elaborates on the concept of culturemes and describes the translation strategies that are helpful in their translation. Based on Lewicki’s (2000) study Obcość w odbiorze przekładu, the author discusses not only names of realities but also, among others, addressative forms, lexical units, or grammatical features. The core element of the discussion is a detailed analysis of existing Polish translations of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. The author discusses the problem in question using the examples collected from numerous Polish translations of this Shakespearean tragedy. |
