Popis: | The feasibility of delivering oral rehydration solution (ORS) and its beneficial effects in a field setting are assessed in this study (part 1 of the study assessed ORS in primary care facilities). 7 rural villages in Negros Occidental The Philippines were studied. 2 people per village (trained staff) were assigned by the international study group to provide ORS to children with diarrhea and to instruct mothers in its proper use. The study addressed the questions of whether mothers would accept ORS and use it properly whether the ORS information spread from community to community and how and if a beneficial effect could be determined. The ORS was the WHO glucose formula; mothers were instructed to use beer bottles for mixing (.5 liters per bottle). 769 episodes of diarrhea in children aged 6 years and younger were treated in the village settings (the episodes occurred in 439 children). At study start only 13% came to the ORS deliverer for treatment initially but at studys conclusion 68% of children with diarrhea came to the ORS deliverer as the first source of treatment indicating high acceptability. In interviews with mothers of treated children 96% could recite the ORS formula correctly; however confusion over what ORS does existed. Many mothers thought ORS stopped diarrhea but nearly two-thirds reported improvement in appetite and childs activity despite the continued diarrhea. In 16% of episodes ORS was stopped before diarrhea ceased. Death rate in this study was .7% as was the hospitalization rate. Mothers also accepted the fact that continued feeding during diarrhea was beneficial. |
