Background: Global plastic production has increased exponentially since 1960s, with over 6300 million metric tons of plastic waste generated to date. A range of health impacts has been associated with plastics exposure, but as only a fraction of plastic chemicals used have been investigated in relation to a limited range of health outcomes, the full extent of this human health concern is still unknown. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a scoping review that maps available evidence on a comprehensive suite of plastic exposures on the wider health impacts of the global human population. Aim: To establish which plastics have and have not been investigated (human, in vivo), and which domains of human health have been assessed in association with those exposures, in primary research studies conducted since 1960. Methods: A scoping review will be conducted following the framework outlined in '2017 Guidance for the Conduct of JBI Scoping Reviews', and reported in accordance with 'Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist'. A literature search of primary clinical studies in English from 1960 onwards will be conducted in MEDLINE (Ovid) and EMBASE (Ovid) databases. References eligible for data extraction will be identified through a quality controlled multi-level screening process. Extracted data will be presented graphically, in diagrammatic and tabular form, with a narrative summary addressing the aim of the scoping review. Conclusion: This scoping review will comprehensively map the primary research undertaken to date on plastic exposure and human health. In addition, the review will identify knowledge gaps, providing a framework for future studies in areas requiring more in-depth research, also informing policy makers and chemical regulators. |
