The chapter presents the theatre of Jernej Lorenci, who belongs to a generation of directors known in Slovenian theatre as “the fourth generation.” Lorenci himself was the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Europe Theatre Prize for (New) Theatrical Realities. At the beginning of his career he did direct some productions on alternative and experimental stages, yet since then he has been working predominantly at major theatre institutions, to which he brings new, alternative forms of theatre or of functioning of the creative team. The chapter reviews Lorenci’s theatrical work from its beginnings to the present day, highlighting the key points and topics of his authorial interest and directing procedures, among them the role of the director in the process, devising texts for a production, the definition of a spectator in theatrical exchange, and above all the search for the human in different literary, cultural and mythological contents. |
