Since the inventions in 1980s of the basic structure, i.e. a layered structure of a perfluorosulfonic acid membrane and gas diffusion electrodes including Pt on carbon and an ionomer, significant advancement has been achieved and finally, commercial products are now in the market for automobile and stationary applications. In this talk, key technologies established in this period were quickly reviewed and present status and issues were presented as well as on-going trends to address the issues.
