Popis: | In the narratives of contemporary musicians, the choro tradition is regularly treated as exclusively employing the specific instrumentation of a musical ensemble known as the regionals. We observe in the literature, however, the use of greater diversity of instruments and formations during performances of the genre in its beginnings. To understand the divergence between these two perspectives, we approach choro from the notion of tradition as conceived by Anthony Giddens. Pervaded with the idea of permanence, tradition is also subject to conflicting discourses and practices by its agents who operate within its abstract systems, thereby able to transform the tradition itself. Based on this observation, we stress that such changes, in the case of choro, are subjugated to negotiations that take place in its ritual space: the roda. We argue, finally, that regionals established themselves–by way of diverse ritual negotiations–as part of an invented choro tradition, which, at present, helps to standardize and particularize the heterogeneity of the instrumental groups dedicated to performing the genre at the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth century. The data used to support our direction and conclusions were extracted from the literature, a participant observation in a choro roda located in the city of Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and from interviews with musicians who dedicated to the performance of the choro genre. |
