Popis: | Introduction: Self-management is important for individuals with heart failure HF to prevent the worsening of the disease and improve quality of life. Self-management includes maintenance, symptom perception, and symptom management. Interoception which includes interoceptive awareness and body awareness are possible mechanisms to explain why patients with HF struggle with self-management. Interoceptive awareness is the objective ability to feel visceral stimuli and use it to inform a decision. Body awareness is the subjective rating of their ability to feel and understand their body. The purpose of this cross sectional descriptive study was to determine if there is an association between interoception and HF self-management and if there are moderating effects of influencing factors on the relationships between interoception and HF self-management. Methods: A total of 100 individuals with heart failure were recruited from a heart failure clinic. Participants answered questionnaires, completed a cognitive test, and the heart beat perception task. Multivariate linear regression was used to test the effect of interoception variables on self-management variables while controlling for anxiety, depression, attention, comorbidities, and rumination. Moderation models for each combination of interoception variables and influencing factors for each outcome were tested. Results: The only significant effect between interoception on a self-management variable was between body awareness and symptom perception (b=.162, p90.4). Conclusion: Interoceptive awareness did not have a significant moderation model on any self-management variables. Higher body awareness is significantly associated with better maintenance and symptom management. |
