Popis: Talwani (1998) shows that the differences between the values for the Bullard B correction published in Swick (1942) and those I calculated (LaFehr, 1991b) owe their existence to the fact that we now use a different gravitational constant. I am grateful to Talwani for pointing this out and regret that this simple (and now obvious) explanation had not occurred to me. However, my effort to change the practice by those who directly use the values published by Swick is still valid: while the major contributions to these differences are not “errors,” they nonetheless exist, and those including the Bullard B correction in their reductions should use the updated values that I have published. The values in Swick’s table should not be used mainly because of the different value for the gravitational constant now in use but, in addition, because small Swick errors from computation or round off also may be avoided. Both components of the differences are shown in detail in Figure 3 of LaFehr (1991b).
