Lecomte examines the rare practice of transnational auto-remake as a site of collaboration between a director and a new national film production environment. Focusing on Gela Babluani’s remake of his own work 13 (Tzameti) for the American market, this chapter draws particularly on Thomas Leitch’s notion of disavowal in the context of remakes in order to reveal the imbalance of power that characterises this type of production. After a brief historical overview of other similar occurrences in the light of Raymond Williams’ definition of hegemony, Lecomte posits Babluani’s remake as a manifestation of imperialism in disguise on the part of the sector of the American film sector known as Indiewood, an area that merges independent aesthetics with mainstream production practices |
