A dispersion, consisting of uniform spherical methyl methacrylate particles 10−6 m (1 μm) in diameter and stabilized with poly-12-hydroxystearic acid, was prepared at high disperse phase concentration in a high boiling-point aliphatic hydrocarbon continuous phase. The apparent viscosity was measured using various instrumental geometries at three different concentrations. Clear evidence was obtained of a transition in rheological characteristics over a narrow range of high disperse phase concentration from that of a mobile fluid to that of a solid as the shear rate applied to the sample is increased. It appears that this effect is a consequence of the acceleration of particle motion and of the compression of particle stabilizer barriers, when the particle concentration is high. |
