Popis: Summary The effects of parathyroid extract (PTE, Lilly) on gastric mucus were studied in rats given PTE alone or with cortisone. Gastric mucosal content of mucus was measured by histochemical techniques with PAS stain and by direct biochemical analysis of the concentration of hexosamines and sialic acid in freeze dried mucosal scrapings. By comparison with untreated controls, PTE caused a substantial increase in gastric mucosal content of mucus, an effect which was partially blocked by cortisone. Separate experiments in which rats were given cortisone and PTE under conditions favorable to formation of "steroid ulcers" showed that PTE exerted a protective action against such ulcers.
