To adequately understand the need for early and appropriate intervention of ADHD, it is important to understand the potential for long term adverse outcomes. A number of long term outcome studies have helped in understanding the various possible risk factors for those who have been diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. Based on results from these studies, it is clear that ADHD diagnosed in childhood carries a risk for significant life challenges over the lifespan. These include reduced educational success and achievement, less job success and satisfaction, social and relationship issues, increased risk for drug and alcohol abuse, growth and obesity concerns, risky driving practices, depression and suicide risk and others. Those with commonly associated conditions such as conduct and mood disorders carry an even higher risk. However, most studies have shown that appropriate interventions, including medication and appropriate behavioral and mental health interventions can significantly decrease and sometimes normalize those risks and outcomes. Early and accurate assessment and intervention appears to provide the best outcomes. |
