Popis: | We investigated the effects of both the preoperative quadriceps muscle strength and activity level on the recovery of quadriceps strength after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using hamstring tendons. Thirty-two males and thirty-four females were included in this study except for patients with multiple ligament injuries of the knee, bilateral or revision ACL reconstruction. All patients were measured for the isokinetic peak torque of their uninvolved and involved quadriceps muscle strength using the cybex machine before and one year after the reconstruction. The results showed that the higher the involved/uninvolved ratio of the quadriceps peak torque and the higher the activity level before operation, the better the recovery of strength in the involved quadriceps muscle at one year after operation. These results indicate that it is important for patients with lower activity level, particularly below recreational level, to strengthen their quadriceps under the guidance of aggressive muscle training preoperatively, and increase rehabilitation motivation postoperatively. |
