Popis: Because of the high molecular weight of most pharmaceutical and biological substances, the recovery, separation and purification of these moieties by ion exchange and adsorption techniques require the use of finely divided ion exchangers and adsorbents. This approach results in serious scale-up problems due to hydraulic difficulties. A novel approach has been developed which permits one to employ finely divided ion exchangers and adsorbents without serious hydraulic problems. The approach involves the use of flocculated media based upon technology developed by the Graver Company and employed on a large scale in water treatment for over two decades. Two examples will be described illustrating the use of this technology. The unique hydraulic behavior of these flocculated ion exchangers and adsorbents will be illustrated.
