Technology and knowledge along with labor and capital are intrinsic essential components of today’s economies of the so-called Knowledge-Based type. Electronics is at the heart of innovations in the knowledge-based economy. At the forefront of development in electronics are advances in the design and implementation of circuits and systems employing full-custom, semi-custom and programmable VLSI technology. Electronic products, in particular those based on gate array technologies, have been extensively employed in the New Zealand economy for many years. A good example is field-programmable gate-array (FPGA) based implementation of the devices and systems in communications equipment. Another emerging area in New Zealand is the use of integrated microelectronic DSP devices in numerous applications. It is highly likely that such tendencies will become even more important in the future. This means that graduates in information and computer systems engineering must have knowledge of microelectronics technology, at least at the systems level. |
