Growing populations around the world, rapid urbanization, and changes in lifestyles have led to increasing solid waste generation. Solid waste management (SWM) is a critical issue faced round the globe. One of the major problems faced in SWM is the lack of strategic planning. A sustainable, cost-effective and environment-friendly SWM system can be achieved only with good planning considering the various real-time features. Hence, the optimization models in SWM along with mathematical tools pave the way for the successful SWM system in real-world applications. Simple arithmetical equation-based models to complex real-time geo information-based models are being adopted in the optimization of SWM. Artificial intelligent geoinformation systems have shown wide success in the dynamic heuristic routing of SWM. High resource recovery rates with low resource consumptions were achieved typically with life cycle analysis-based SWM models. Integrating the different criteria of optimization and the features of the SWM system, with proper matrix and formulation, makes the way to the upright optimization models. Many problems in SWM systems are location-specific and process specific. On this basis, the region-specific system to manage various components of the waste stream is an idea to have better economic and environmental feasibility. |
