Native valvular disease is not “cured” when replaced by a prosthetic valve. The prosthetic valve requires vigilant monitoring and is associated with many complications that often require a multidisciplinary approach to evaluation and management. In this chapter, we will give an overview of the basic properties of mechanical versus bioprosthetic heart valves. This chapter will also highlight the primary complications associated with prosthetic valves, including bleeding, valve thrombosis, thromboembolism, valvular regurgitation, and infective endocarditis. From the perspective of the hospitalist, it is imperative to recognize prosthetic valve disease and to know the fundamental steps in the diagnosis and management of its related complications. |
