This article is a supplementary progress report on a study comparing the effect of four different modes of communication upon the relative learning of relevant and irrelevant information. It proposes that the television and film instructional situations are more efficient than the ordinary classroom instruction because they screen out more irrelevant material. The study was supported by an NDEA, Title VII grant to the Communications Research Center at Michigan State University, and by the University's Applied Mechanics Department, of which Charles O. Harris is head. Dr. Deutschmann is director of the Center, and Mrs. McMillan is a research assistant there. Dr. Barrow, formerly an assistant professor at the Center, is now a project director for the Bureau of Advertising, ANPA. Professor Ralph L. Vanderslice was responsible for producing the study films. |
