Popis: Respiratory problems are a common issue in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, (ASD), with sleep disorders and asthma being the most frequently encountered. Treatment of sleep disorders is paramount because poor sleep impacts the mental and physical well-being not only of children and adults with ASD but their families and caregivers as well. Evaluation and management of pulmonary and sleep disorders take patience and attention to detail from caregivers and medical providers; diaries and behavioral approaches are central features. There is conflicting evidence regarding the prevalence of asthma in ASD, but the greater concern is the effects that commonly used medications used to treat asthma have on behavior. In this chapter, the evaluation and management of respiratory and sleep disorders in children and adults with ASD are discussed.
