Comparative study of the protective and therapeutic effects of Manuka and Saudi Sidr honey on experimentally induced gastric ulcer in rats

Popis: Gastric ulcer is a major gastrointestinal disease, constituting an important health issue in all societies. Honey is a sugary, flavorful, and nutritious natural product. This comparative study was designed to explore and compare the protective and therapeutic effects of manuka and Saudi Sidr honey in a rat model of gastric ulceration. Forty-two rats were divided into 6 groups: G1: healthy control; G2: ulcerated, ulceration was induced by 4 oral doses of aspirin for 4 weeks (200 mg/kg b.w./week); G3: manuka honey, therapeutic, after induction of gastric ulcer, 2.5 g/kg of manuka honey was administered daily for 30 days; G4: Saudi Sidr honey therapeutic, after induction of gastric ulcer, 0.5 g/kg Saudi Sidr honey was administered daily for 30 days; G5: manuka honey, protective, manuka honey was administered at 2.5 g/kg b.w/daily for 15 days induction then continued for a further 15 days; G6: Saudi Sidr honey, protective, Saudi Sidr honey was administered at 0.5 g/kg daily for 15 days before induction of gastric ulcer, then continued for a further 15 days. Gastric juice parameters, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers were measured, histological analysis was performed.
