Acoustic emission analysis of cyclically loaded superelastic shape memory alloy fiber reinforced mortar beams

Popis: Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are metallic alloys that can recover their nonlinear deformations upon unloading. The use of SMAs in cementitious composites as fibers can enable crack recovery and re-centering capabilities. In this study, the crack recovery characteristics of SMA fiber reinforced mortar specimens subjected to flexural cyclic loading are studied through acoustic emission analysis. SMA fiber reinforced mortar specimens with fiber volume ratios of 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% are tested under cyclic flexural loads. Acoustic emissions (AE) signals are captured and analyzed to characterize the crack formation and crack width development at each cycle of loading. In addition, the crack width propagation of the specimens is monitored by Digital Image Correlation measurement system and is used as a basis in AE analyses. Results show that the SMA fiber reinforced mortars exhibit considerable re-centering and crack recovery characteristics at large deformation amplitudes.
