Popis: | Shatter cracks form in hot-rolled rail steels when hydrogen atoms diffuse into sinks, change to molecular hydrogen gas and exceed a critical pressure. Cracking can occur at temperatures below 200°C. Hydrogen degassing to “safe” levels, i.e. below the threshold concentration causing cracks, is achieved by vacuum degassing the liquid steel, or by slow controlled cooling of the hot-rolled rails in insulated tanks. However, cooling conditions found to be effective for relatively soft standard C-Mn rail steels have not proved entirely successful in preventing crack formation in harder alloy premium rails. A program of hydrogen outgassing experiments was carried out on alloy (Cr-Si-V) and standard C-Mn rails to develop a method of calculating cooling conditions to reduce known, high hydrogen concentrations to safe levels. Isothermal and controlled cooling experiments were carried out on hot-rolled plates that simulated the heads of rails. Estimates of the hydrogen trapped in sinks were obtained from oth... |
