The mammalian female is born with her ovaries containing the entire pool of oocytes, all of them arrested at the diplotene of the first meiotic prophase. Meiotic arrest in the oocytes persists throughout infancy. After the onset of puberty, at each cycle, one or more oocytes respond to the midcycle surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) and resume meiosis. Oocytes that resumed meiosis had generated an haploid nucleus and acquired the capacity to be fertilized. Resumption of meiosis is therefore referred to as oocyte maturation. |
