Five experiments are reported which investigate the responses of domestic fowl of two different stocks and several different ages towards novel food or other novel objects introduced into the home environment. The results indicated that one stock, in general, displayed more adaptive behaviour under these circumstances than did the other, making the former more desirable for commercial use. Possible bases for behavioural suitability to intensive environments are discussed. It is suggested that genetic variation in behavioural traits should be considered in breeding programmes. |
