Oklahoma congressional elections rarely garner national attention. The 2020 Oklahoma 5th District race was different. Following Representative Kendra Horn’s (D) upset of the Republican incumbent in 2018, the Oklahoma 5th became a district Democrats focused on maintaining and Republicans prioritized regaining. In a politically diverse district with large urban, suburban, and rural constituencies the candidates faced the challenge of overcoming outside involvement in the campaign to craft politically moderate images without alienating their bases. In the end, this race like many in the 2020 cycle was a story of turnout. In Oklahoma, record turnout was a deep shade of red and State Senator Stephanie Bice (R) narrowly defeated the incumbent, returning the district to Republican control. |
