Popis: A target can be classified based upon an IFF signal, a visual image, or something similar. But an uncooperative target will not transmit a valid IFF signal and will attempt to obscure its image from the defender. Can the target be identified from its motion pattern; e.g., turn rates, tempo? This might readily be done if the motion parameters were inferred without error. But in actual engagements, the motion tempo can only be approximated. Certainly, classification becomes more sure with a long data stream. But if defense requires quick reaction, sophisticated processing is required. The chapter explores the utility of the GWE for target classification in a noisy measurement environment. We show that in some circumstances the maneuver characteristics of a target are sufficient to give an indication of target type. The result holds promise for the architect of a command system.
