Popis: | The anatomy of the nerve fibers of the central nervous system is one of the most difficult anatomical areas to study in the entire body. This is due to the fact that, until less than 20 years ago, it was necessary to dissect the brain in order to see these anatomical structures. Currently, three-dimensional images that represent the neural tracts in vivo can be obtained non-invasively through a radiological study with specific sequences of magnetic resonance and post-processing. However, ever since it was applied to the field of medicine, this sequence of magnetic resonance has been the target of criticism, because there are some limitations to tractography. One of its most important drawbacks is its interpretation: the image that is obtained and then post-processed is represented with fibers in different colors and directions. Ideally, there should be information about what those fibers correspond to, so that it can be used as training material for healthcare students. Another significant limitation is the reliability of the representation of neural tracts, because distortions in the image have been described that may be relevant, particularly in the field of neurosurgery. Our goal with this article is to describe one of the main tracts of the CNS, the corticospinal tract, also known as the pyramidal tract, and to assess interpersonal variability and carry out a detailed description of this structure in order to facilitate its interpretation for users. In addition, we will present a comparative analysis of the two software applications used to obtain three-dimensional tractographic images: a free program (3D Slicer) and a commercial program (AW Server). |
