Popis: Subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (SF) or artificial wetlands filter (AWF) systems were examined for potential use in the removal from various waste streams of complex halogenated and nonhalogenated organic compounds as represented by benzoic acid (BA). Three small, pilot-scale AWF systems with differing reactor configurations including two planted reactors (Scirpus validus Valn) and an unplanted control, were run on a continuous flow basis and tested for removal of BA. Initial results for all systems indicated excellent (nearly 99%) removal of BA at concentrations up to 40 mg/l. At higher influent concentrations of 80 mg/l, a double stage, planted-reactor combination resulted in no effluent increases of BA, while all other test reactors including a double stage, unplanted system, showed marked increases at this higher concentration. Comparison of microbial dominance/diversity of the systems indicated a rich microbial population containing facultative anaerobes and fermenters as well as strict anaerobes and aerobes that could potentially adapt to a variety of organic substrates, but little difference in microbes was noted between planted and unplanted systems.
