Popis: Binuclear copper(II) complexes [Cu 2 X 2 (pyal) 2 = SPMN] Y 2−4 (X = halogenide ion or H 2 O; Y = nitrate or bromine ion) have been prepared from Schiff base ligands derived from pyridine-2-carbaldehyde (pyal) and spermine (SPMN). ESR spectra of these binuclear complexes in methanol glasses at 77 K exhibited seven hyperfine lines at the g∥ region (A∥ = 85−90 G). This is indicative of the existence of an interacting pair of Cu(II) atoms in the binuclear complexes. Magnetic susceptibilities were measured over the temperature range 4.2–300 K. The best fit values for g and 2J were 2.08 and −2.0 cm −1 for [Cu 2 Cl 2 (pyal) 2 =SPMN(NO 3 ) 2 , and 2.23 and −40.0 cm −1 for [Cu 2 Br 2 (pyal) 2 =SPMN]Br 2 respectively. Redox behavior or these binuclear complexes were investigated by use of polarography and controlled-potential electrolysis. Reduction potentials for copper(II) ions of the binuclear complexes in DMF at 25 °C were not sufficiently high ( ca. −0.15 V vs. S.C.E.) as suitable models for type III coppers in biological systems.
