Superconducting composites make use of two completely different metals, e.g., niobium and copper. Niobium is a good superconductor itself and serves as a base for a series of alloys and compounds with remarkable superconducting properties. In compounds with the A-15 structure, which, are extremely brittle. Copper, on the other hand, remains normal-conducting but possesses good mechanical properties and exhibits high thermal conductivity. A combination of copper with an A-15 phase, e.g., Nb/sub 3/Sn, will lead to attractive composite superconductors. By employing these principles multicore conductors are prepared today which carry high loss-less currents whose production, however, is rather complicated and whose ductility is limited. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate the feasibility of producing composite conductors based on heterogeneous alloys. |
