Popis: | In the early, confusing hours just after the Oklahoma City bomb blast, I heard on television that officials were looking for two male suspects, described as “swarthy.” While mentioning that the bombing occurred on the anniversary of the Waco tragedy, media attention seemed to focus quickly on these men, whose appearance was further described as “Middle Eastern.”. Just as quickly, anger against Muslims—for these days, swarthy Middle Easterners must of course be Muslim—boiled up in Riverside, where I live and work. The elementary school at the mosque was closed after a death threat was phoned in against the children; a woman wearing traditional headcovering was spat on in a restaurant on University Avenue; talk of Islamic extremists was on the lips of many. |
