Popis: A computer-based educational package consisting of drill and practice routines and computer simulations of clinical microbiology specimens for identification of organisms was developed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of laboratory instruction. The simulated specimens were worked up as unknowns and color photographs used to depict test results. Student performance and the perceptions of faculty and students were used to determine program effectiveness. Increases in test scores, although not statistically significant, and high student satisfaction were obtained with the experimental program. The authors concluded that the use of computer simulation with interactive color photographs is at least as effective as traditional instructional methods for teaching clinical microbiology laboratory skills. Utility of the computer-based program in similar contexts as well as advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
