Glass breakage is one of the main failure modes found in the field. Mechanical stress caused by hail impact, wind or snow load or localized heating due to hot spots or light arcing are leading to forces which can break the front glass. Understanding the cause for glass breakage is important for future failure avoidance. Elastic deformations or strains lead to the birefringence of glass so that stress can be made visible. A further developed instrument uses the scattered light method to determine through-the-thickness stress distribution in flat glass products. The instrument was used to measure glass stress in tempered and non-tempered solar glass and to perform rootcause analysis to glass breakage in the field. If the surface stress of one side turns to a higher tensile stress (+50 MPa) glass breakage can occur.
