Determination of the content of caffeine and taurine in energy drinks and dietetic products by hplc method

Popis: Background Caffeine and taurine are widely used as ergogenic aids in the population of professional athletes. However, in recent years their use in the general population is becoming popular. There is increased number of energy drinks and dietary products on the market which contain these substances. The aim Declared caffeine and taurine content often do not coincide with the actual amounts that are found in the products. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the actual content of the consumed products, as well to evaluate the intake of these physiologically active substances. Methodes This paper presents the results of analyzed content of caffeine and taurine in selected products from the market. HPLC-DAD was used for evaluation of the content of taurine and caffeine in energy drinks and dietetic products. Results and discussion The content of caffeine and taurine in all tested energy drinks did not exceed the declared content. In 57% of the tested dietary supplements obtained amount of caffeine significantly exceeded the declared daily dose, and 28% of all samples did not have declared caffeine content. In 50% of dietary supplements that contained taurine label did not contain information on its amount. Conclusion It is necessary to take more rigorous control and firmer legislation into the system of dietary products which contain caffeine and taurine.
