Popis: | Experiments were carried out to induce an L-cycle and to obtain stabilized L-forms in bacteria occurring in the nasopharynx of white rats, by immunizing the animals with a vaccine and gamma-globulin prepared from these bacteria. The results were as follows. (1) A survey of the bacterial biocenose of the nasopharynx of white rats (Dobra Voda breed), carried out at various seasons, showed thatStreptococcus viridans was present regularly and that Gramnegative parvobacteria including Pasteurella-like and haemophilic bacteria, bacteria of theColi-Aerogenes Group andNeisseriae occurred very often. (2) A specific gamma-globulin was prepared by immunizing rabbits with (a) a mixture ofPasteur ella-like and haemophilic bacteria (2 cases), (b) purePasteurella-like bacteria (6 cases), and (c) a pure culture ofHaemophilus. The titre of complement-fixing antibodies of the preparation varied from 1 : 64 (against haemophilic bacteria) and 1 : 256 to 1 : 4096 (againstPasteur ella-like bacterie). (3) The appearance of L-colonies was followed after the administration of one intramuscular injection of gamma-globulin to rats using a dose of 10 ml. per kg. body weight. L-colonies were obtained in one rat, but the micro-organism was lost in its 20th passage, before it was possible to elucidate its antigenic relationship to bacteria occurring in the nasopharynx of the same animal, especially toPasteurella-like bacteria, gamma-globulin against which had been administered to the animal. (4) In the course of active immunization of rats with some strains of bacteria present in their nasopharynx and immediately afterwards, it was possible to isolate L-colonies from the nasopharynx of 4 animals. On passaging one of the strains isolated on nutrient media, the L-colonies were lost and a culture ofStreptococcus viridans was obtained. (5) It is not yet possible to explain the occurrence of L-colonies in the nasopharynx of rats after the treatment indicated as being caused by this treatment. |
