Popis: This study examines earnings differentials between male and female teachers. Data are from the 1987 Schools and Staffing Survey by the US Department of Education. Results indicate that substantial earnings differences exist between males and females. Some of these differences are due to factors such as years of teaching experience, education, level taught, marital status, and subject taught. Nevertheless, there appears to be a cost associated with being a female teacher. Indeed, after regression standardization procedures, the cost of being a female teacher is estimated to he approximately 5% of their annual average contract salaries. We next attempted to disentangle the explanatory power of human capital factors from segregation and other factors. Results indicate that the level of human capital items accounts for about 60% of the salary gap between male and female teachers. Our segregation measures account for about 7% of the gap.
