This chapter focuses on the treatment of women and the women’s labour market. Looks at the problem of gender discrimination in the labour market in Japan and at government efforts to resolve this situation. In particular, the author looks at the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, the Angel plans to provide better childcare facilities and efforts to promote the family-friendly firm. The author finds that it is the internal labour market structure in Japan that remains as the largest barrier to gender equality. The gender gap in pay for full-time employees is found to be narrowing, especially in small and medium-sized firms. |
