The growing requirement of synthetic inputs, including fertilizers, has been one of the reasons for the increasing investment in farming and depletion of soil fertility, leading to the agrarian crisis in a set of regions in India. In order to mitigate the crisis, it is imperative to develop effective manure fertilizers and supplant the synthetic fertilizers. In this regard, the present study attempts to find out the most suitable ratio of cattle dung to pigeon pea stalk for composting. The results from pit composting of different ratios of cattle dung to the pigeon pea stalk (4:0, 4:1 and 4:2 by volume) are compared and the spatial variations in temperature were recorded. The highest temperature, as well as sanitation requirement (temperature ≥ 55 °C for at least three days), could only be achieved with the mixture containing cattle dung to pigeon pea stalk in the ratio of 4:1. Thus, this proportion is suggested for the efficient composting process. |
