The aim of the current literature review is to turn the readers’ attention to the methods and tools used when studying procrastination. Procrastination, which is a chronic postponing of our duties, is usually studied with tools such as questionnaires filled by the participants or other tools using closed-end questions. The participants, therefore, cannot openly describe why they procrastinate. Giving them such an opportunity could significantly improve our understanding of the causes and conditions of procrastination as well as ways of justifying it. In our culture, postpoing one’s duties is usually connected with serious consequences – participants admit a deep feeling of shame, anxiety, powerlessness and hopelessness. They declare, that despite own motivation they repeat old, irrational behavioral patterns. Taking into account the scale of this phenomenon (75–90% of students admit to procrastination), the issue of an in-depth understanding of its mechanisms seems vital. The text also postulates a follow-up of the previous methods with qualitative analysis. |
