Effect of aquatic humus on uptake of zinc and barium to green alga Selenastrum capricornutum Printz has been radiometrically studied using Ba-133 and Zn-65 tracers. The presence of aquatic humus decreases uptake of barium and zinc by alga. The logarithm of accumulated radioactivity of Ba-133 and/or Zn-65 is linearly proportional to logarithm of wet biomass of alga. Concentration factors for barium (1 ± 0.2) × 10 3 and zinc (15.6 ± 3.6) × 10 3 were independent of biomass production in presence of aquatic humus of TOC 1.62 mg C/1. We also found that radiobarium added in the form of BaCl2 in absence of aquatic humus is immediately accumulated by the alga in contrast to accumulation of radiozinc added in the form of ZnCl2. The aquatic humus also supresses the sorption of barium and zinc onto the walls of the cultivation vessels as well as the sorption onto membrane filters Millipore HAWP. |
