In recent years, psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy has experienced renewed research interest and there are now implications that it may be effective in treating various forms of mental illness when co-administered with psychotherapy (1, 2). Surveys of psychiatrists (3) and psychologists (4) highlight that there is a baseline openness to psychedelic research among mental health professionals, but that only a few of them have detailed knowledge about these novel therapies. Qualitative research, so far focused on the perceptions of cancer health care workers, with results showing some optimism, but also concerns about trial design, dosing, real-world applicability, and the potential side effects of these therapies (5, 6). It is important to understand in-depth how mental health practitioners view psychedelics, as they are among the best qualified to assess the implications of their use in psychotherapy for the treatment of mental disorders. Likewise, any potential applications of these types of therapy outside the research setting directly impact this group of health professionals. Therefore, we will conduct interviews with selected European psychiatrists to gain in-depth insight on their attitudes on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. |
