Popis: The numerous technological applications of the successful control of the transition to turbulence in shear layers (drag reduction, enhanced mixing, etc.) provide a strong incentive for better understanding the transition process. The research described here is concerned with the weakly-nonlinear evolution of a wave packet of unstable waves in the boundary layer of a flat plate. The waves are studied in the limit of large Reynolds number near the lower branch of the neutral stability curve. The analysis employs both the method of matched asymptotic expansions (in this case, the boundary-layer interaction theory) and a new multiple-scale perturbation technique based on an invariance property implicit in the procedure.
