1. 1. Carbohydrate and triacylglycerol levels of selected tissues were determined for pups and adults of the northwest Atlantic harp seal. 2. 2. Liver carbohydrate levels remain constant during the first week of neonatal development but increase markedly at about the time that nursing ceases. 3. 3. No pronounced changes are observed in the triacylglycerol content of liver during the first month of neonatal development. 4. 4. Prodigious reserves of triacylglycerol accumulate in blubber during the first few days of neonatal development; the high levels attained at this time are maintained during subsequent development. 5. 5. It is suggested that blubber triacylglycerol may not be a primary source of metabolic energy in fasting harp seal pups. |
