A comparison is made of the methods of Cowell, Encke and the variation-of-parameters for the computation of high precision orbits. Analysis of the integration of an analytical three-body trajectory and an analytical low thrust spiral trajectory indicates the importance of decreasing the overall number of integration steps to avoid roundoff errors. Comparative computations demonstrate tha t Encke's method is preferable in the ballistic lunar trajectory, variation-of-parameters in the low thrust trajectory, and Cowell's method in the high thrust trajectory. The overall computational efficiency of Encke's and the variation-of-parameters method is also shown. |
