Popis: A detailed study of the fission cross section of 240Pu is of interest partly because it provides a test of the theoretical predictions concerning the energy dependence of the fission probability and partly because of its relevance to the possible use of 240Pu as a fast reactor fuel. Results are given of measurements of the 240Pu fission cross section over the energy range En = 0·04 ± 4·0 MeV using the reaction 3H(p,n)3He as the source of neutrons. The fission cross section was found to be ∼1 ·6 barn in the plateau region (1–4 MeV) but at En ⋍ 0·7 MeV it has fallen to half this value. The cross section continues to fall as En is reduced to 0·3 MeV but thereafter it falls off more slowly remaining almost constant (∼0·065 barn) in the interval 0·04 < En < 0·15 MeV. The correlation between the fine structure observed in the fission cross section curve and the position of known levels in 240Pu excited by neutron inelastic scattering is discussed.
