Popis: Desert Archaeology, Inc., under contract to the City of Phoenix Aviation Department (Aviation), has completed archaeological site boundary testing for the Dutch Canal Ruin, within the city-owned Consolidated Campus Building 1 property. The work was initiated due to the possibility that archaeological remains associated with the Dutch Canal Ruin, a prehistoric habitation and agricultural site, might be present within the project area. Archaeological testing began on 27 July 2015, under the direction of Connie A. Darby of Desert Archaeology, and was completed on 29 July 2015. Dr. T. Kathleen Henderson served as Principal Investigator for the project. Three person-days were expended in this effort. The objective of testing was to determine if archaeological features were present within a roughly 1-acre area at the northwestern end of the Consolidated Campus Building 1 property. This area is contained within the city's 250-ft-wide archaeology sensitive buffer for the Dutch Canal Ruin. Aviation requested archaeological testing of this buffer area at the direction of the City Archaeology Office to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and city ordinances protecting archaeological resources. The work was conducted in accordance with the approved General Historic Properties Treatment Plan for City o f Phoenix Projects (Montero et al. 2008) and a project-specific Work Plan prepared by Desert Archaeology (Henderson 2015). In total, 108.5 linear m of trench were excavated during testing. No archaeological features or other evidence of any substantive cultural context were identified. The testing results indicate the project area is outside the limits of the Dutch Canal Ruin site. Based on these results, a recommendation is provided herein that no further archaeological work is necessary for the Consolidated Campus Building 1 construction project to proceed.
