Aggression and disruption pose significant risks to caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Previous literature suggests that specific diagnosis, level of impairment, gender, and communication deficits may impact the severity of aggression and disruption in this population. Additionally, the probability of aggression and disruption is higher in individuals dually diagnosed with IDD and certain genetic and psychiatric conditions. Clinicians working with individuals presenting with aggression and disruptive behavior should conduct a thorough functional behavioral assessment to determine the specific contingencies that may maintain these behaviors. This chapter will discuss the overall prevalence of aggression and disruptive behavior in dually diagnosed individuals and will emphasize considerations in the assessment of these topographies of problem behavior. |
