Corrosion experiments were performed on 316 stainless steel in solutions relevant to the aqueous blanket concept for the ITER program. Those solutions included 2.1M and 4.2M and saturated LiOH, as well as 2.1M LiNo 3 at 25°C, 60°C and 90°C. Experiments conducted were immersion tests, SCC screening, linear polarization, and potentiodynamic polarization. Experiments were performed under laboratory conditions for reference purposes, as well as in a radiation field utilizing a linear electron accelerator. General corrosion rates were in the range of 0.2–16 μm/yr for deaerated 2.1M LiOH. 2–30 μm/yr for non-deaerated 2.1M LiOH and 0.13–2 μm/yr in 2.1M LiNO 3 at 25°C. Corrosion rates increased with solution concentration and temperature. Pitting and crevice corrosion were observed in LiNO 3 solutions as well as mixtures of LiNO 3 and LiOH. No indication of SCC was observed. Radiolysis products shifted corrosion potentials in the noble direction, but had no effect on corrosion products or on corrosion rates. |
