Popis: The centre of focus in research on John of Salisbury has been on what made John's thought unique, perhaps somewhat to the detriment of the study of what made his thought a unity. In particular, it has been argued that John adapted recognizably Aristotelian doctrines into a framework inspired by the skeptic philosophy of the New Academy, thus creating an original synthesis escaping the constricting dichotomy of Stoic/Christian ethics of interiority and Aristotelian teleological virtue ethics. The author's main objection to highlighting moderation and liberty as the core principles of John's ethics is that these principles as they appear in John's writings seem entirely formal, while John's ethics as a whole have a clear substantial content to which these formal considerations are subordinated. The concept of grace in John's thought, and the role it plays in his lines of argument, has received comparatively little attention in recent scholarship. Keywords: Aristotelian teleological virtue ethics; Christian ethics; John of Salisbury; skeptic philosophy
