Popis: The biological activity of supercritical fluid (SCF) extracts of St. John’s wort and hyperforin solutions isolated from these extracts has been studied relative to both prokaryotic (standard bacteria strains) and eukaryotic (yeast and sea urchin gametes and zygotes). A pronounced toxicity of the hyperforin solution in relation to the blue pus bacillus Pseudomonas aeruginosa was observed. No antimicrobial activity of the same solution with respect to other tested bacteria and yeast was revealed. In addition, the toxicities of both the hyperforin solution and total St. John’s wort SCF extract for sperm cells and zygotes of sea urchin were registered. Addition of the SCF extract to a culture of growing embryos does not affect fertilization and division, but cell development terminates at an early gastrula stage. This indicates that the extract damages the genome transcription process in the zygotes.
